FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) represents a group of disorders that affect our breathing while we are asleep, and are characterized by disruptions of normal breathing patterns that only occur during sleep.

One of the SDB includes sleep apnea which is a condition where a person stops breathing repeatedly while they are sleeping.

There are 3 different type of sleep apnea:
-Obstructive sleep is a condition caused by a blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissue of throat collapses and close the airways during sleep. It is the most common form of sleep apnea.
-As for central sleep apnea, the airway is not blocked but the brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe.
-Mixed sleep apnea, as the name implies, is a combination of the two. With each apnea event, the brain rouses the person, usually only partially, to signal breathing to resume. As a result, the patient’s sleep is extremely fragmented and poor quality.

  • Loud snoring.
  • Sleepiness or lack of energy during the day.
  • Morning headaches.
  • Restless sleep
  • Forgetfulness or learning problems, depressed, and a decreased interest in sex.
  • Waking up frequently to urinate.
  • Insomnia

The common risk factors for sleep apnea include being male, overweight, and over the age of 40 and a smoker. However, anyone can have sleep apnea — young, old, male, female, and even children.

If left undiagnosed and untreated, sleep apnea can eventually lead to high blood pressure and other cardiovascular disease, memory problems, weight gain, impotence, Type II Diabetes and headaches. Moreover, untreated sleep apnea may be responsible for job impairment and motor vehicle crashes.

You can complete our STOP BANG Sleep Questionnaire to determine you risk of having sleep apnea.

If found high risk, you may enrol to our Home Sleep Study.

Depending on the type of sleep apnea you are diagnosed., doctor may prescribed non-invasive solution like continuous positive air pressure (CPAP) or bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP). Both treatments are reversible and you can remove the device at any time if there is a problem. Other option include which surgical treatments which are not reversible, may be painful and can require recovery time.

You will wake up feeling like a new person. You get more energy during the day, stopped snoring and have quality sleep with fewer interruptions. This ultimately leads to better quality of life
